How to Be a Good Leader Today: Sharpen Your Vision With 3 Questions

By HaBO Village Team

Leaders come in all shapes and sizes and they are NOT based on a position. But when you are in a leadership position and have the responsibilities of running a company, developing and learning how to be a good leader is essential to having a business filled with passion and provision.

Since companies will rise and fall based on the quality of leadership, you want to make sure your company thrives!

How Do You Be a Good Leader?

By having a clear vision where your company needs to go and how you will get it there!

"Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality." - Warren Bennis

When you can answer these 3 questions about the vision for the future of your company, you will be in better shape to lead and you will have more of your team following.

1. Where are we going?

As a leader, develop your vision (and no, I don’t mean getting your eyes checked for needing glasses). Take the time today to dream and plan for 5 years out or 10 years out. Give yourself some time in your day push away the tyranny of the urgent and look ahead. When you have a target of WHERE you are going, you have a clear goal to pursue and this makes all the difference.

2. Why are we going there?

Reflect on and clearly articulate the WHY. This is at the core of your future success. If your WHY isn’t strong OR you are not able to communicate the WHY clearly to your employees, it will be harder for them to follow. So take time to write it down, share it with someone who you trust and can give honest feedback about how your WHY comes across. This is key to how you can be a good leader.

3. How are we getting there?

You may not have all the answers, but when you can lay a path, however rocky it may seem, you are giving vision to those who need to know the HOW. Not everyone can jump in based on the where or the why. Even giving the first step or two can get them onboard.

Do these questions excite you or scare you? Maybe you are feeling a bit of both and that’s a good thing!

Leaders Who Have Longer Term Success Have

  • Clear understanding of their values and commitment to them
  • Resolve to see things to the end
  • Have a clear understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses
  • Take time to be introspective
  • Keep their team focused on the mission

Keep in mind that water runs downhill. When you take the time to answer these 3 questions and clearly communicate them to the rest of your company, your team will catch the vision and they will jump onboard with you.

So what are you waiting for? Close your door, turn off your phone and start building your vision with these 3 questions today. This is a first step to how to be a good leader in your small business that you can do TODAY!
